SATURDAY

The Pontiacs pick up four points before taking a week off. Next action is not until Friday the 14th when they travel to Brooks.

I've been asked for my take on the Scott Gabriel hit on Shawn Bates in the 3rd period. From my view Devon Kalinski was carrying the puck down the left boards through the neutral zone with Bates heading through the centre of the ice with both players attacking the blueline. As they reach the line Bates heads hard towards the net against defenceman Scott Gabriel. Gabriel's Defence partner does a good job of angeling off Kalinski so 'Devo' slams on the breaks a few feat inside the line and turns his head to look back to the neutral zone to see if there is a trailer coming in he can find. Before anything else happens Shawn Bates is sprawled out on the ice in front of Esposito in net for the Cru. It was a needless cheapshot and a blatant attempt to injure far away from the puck.

Bates had been beaking at Gabriel (and Gabriel had been giving it back) all night but to think that Bates got what he deserved because he got Gabriel mad is nothing short of lunacy. I bet Tie Domi was pretty mad at Scott Niedermayer when he elbowed him in 2001, doesn't make it right. I'm sure Domi was upset with Ulf Samuelsson when he sucker punched him in 1995. Dale Hunter had to listen to the whole crowd, at Nassau County Coliseum chanting Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Hey Goodbye when he got frustrated with Pierre Turgeon for scoring another goal in the 1993 playoffs and Steve Moore probably really pissed off Todd Bertuzzi. The fact Bates wasn't seriously hurt doesn't take away the fact it was a clear attempt to injure.

It's my Blog and these are my views.

Beyond the silly incidents in both games there was some tremendous hockey played by both clubs.

The Pontiacs not taking the SAT's today are helping out with a food drive in Bonnyville. It might be cold outside but that isn't stopping the team from doing something good for the community.

The blog reached 10,000 hits last week. Thanks to everyone who visits. The response has been more than I ever imagined.

As for that hit on Bates, I was watching the play on the boards and saw Bates heading hard to the net and next thing I saw was him laying in the slot face down not moving. The cheap shot was away from the play so there was no reason for any hit let alone a flying elbow. Hopefully the league at least has a look at the tape and figures it out from there.
